St. Nicholas

Saint Nicholas, kindliest of bishops, now with God in heaven's glory, we who are pilgrims still, pray you to show us kindness on our weary way, and when life's span has ended, to shepherd us to happiness above.

Dominican Liturgy

St. Nicholas is certainly one of the most favorite saints of both East and West. There are more customs surrounding St. Nicholas than any other saint. The Dominican Order has long devotion to St. Nicholas. When the Church of St. Nicholas in Bologna was given to ST. Dominic, the Church was trying to heal the schism that had occurred with the Orthodox Churches. Dominicans also were involved with the dialogue and continue to do so until today. To help in this endeavor it was decided by one of the General Chapters that each Dominican church should have an altar in honor of St. Nicholas and that each day special prayers should be recited by the community to him. Unfortunately this practice has died out, but we still have a great devotion to him. In the Dominican Liturgy his Office for today was proper. And the his Shrine in Bari is taken care of by Dominicans since 1951.
